How to Use a Chainsaw Safely: A Beginner's Guide

Chainsaws are powerful tools that can be used for a variety of tasks, but they can also be dangerous if not used properly. This guide will teach you the basics of chainsaw safety so that you can use your chainsaw safely and effectively.

Before You Start

Before you even start using your chainsaw, there are a few things you need to do to make sure that you are safe. First, you need to make sure that you are wearing the proper safety gear. This should include:

You should also make sure that the area where you will be using the chainsaw is clear of people and objects. It is also recommneded that you make sure someone is aware of your location and approximate working time. Keep a phone & a first aid kit near the working area, just in case. Once you have taken these precautions, you can start preparing your chainsaw for use.

Preparing Your Chainsaw

Before you start using your chainsaw, you need to make sure that it is properly prepared. This includes:

  • Checking the chain tension.
  • Sharpening the chain.
  • Gripping the chainsaw properly.

Checking the Chain Tension

The chain tension is important because it affects how well the chainsaw cuts. If the chain is too loose, it can come off the bar and injure you. If the chain is too tight, it can damage the saw. To check the chain tension, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the chainsaw and let it cool down.
  2. Place the chainsaw on a flat surface.
  3. Hold the bar with one hand and the chain with the other.
  4. Check the tension of the chainsaw by pulling the chain off of the bar. It should still be tight and "snap" back onto the bar. You should only be able to pull off 1 or 2 drivelinks from the chainsaw bar.
  5. Adjust the chain tension as needed.

Sharpening the Chain

A dull chain will not cut as well and can be more dangerous to use. To sharpen the chain, you will need a chainsaw sharpening file. Follow these steps to sharpen your chain:

  1. Turn off the chainsaw and let it cool down.
  2. TOP TIP: Use a sharpie or marker pen to mark the first tooth you sharpen. This helps remember the starting point.
  3. File the chain in the direction of the cutting teeth.
  4. File each tooth until it is sharp.
  5. Rotate the chain manually to make sure you sharpen every cutting tooth.

Gripping the Chainsaw Properly

The way you grip the chainsaw is important for safety. You should always grip the chainsaw with both hands. The correct way of holding a saw is with the left-hand on the top handle, and the right hand on the rear-trigger handle. This ensures the chainsaw bar and chainsaw chain is kept further from the body during use.
