Starting Your Chainsaw: Petrol and Battery Models

Safety First: Essential Checks Before You Start

Before you even think about starting your chainsaw, your safety kit should be a top priority. You should always wear the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes a pair of chainsaw gloves, eye protection (goggles or a visor), ear defenders, and a hard hat. Wearing proper footwear, like steel-toe boots, is also highly recommended to prevent accidents. This gear is designed to keep you safe and should never be overlooked.

Beyond the kit, it's about being sensible and aware. Always check your work area is clear of people, pets, and anything that could get in the way. Maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the chainsaw and a stable stance to keep control. Avoid rushing or making any sudden movements, and always keep your concentration on the task at hand.

A Simple Guide to Starting Your Petrol Chainsaw

Starting a petrol chainsaw is a straightforward process once you know the steps. The most common mistake is a flooded engine, which can happen if you pull the starter cord too many times with the choke on full. Always place the saw on stable ground before you start and, importantly, check your user manual as procedures can vary slightly between models and brands like Stihl or Husqvarna.

Here’s a general guide to help you get going:

  • Engage the chain brake to ensure the chain cannot move accidentally.
  • Press the fuel primer bulb several times until it’s full of fuel. (Some saws don't have this feature).
  • For a cold start, put the choke lever in the "full" position.
  • Hold the chainsaw firmly on the ground, and give the starter cord a few swift pulls until you hear the engine "pop" or "fire."
  • Immediately move the choke lever to the "half" position.
  • Pull the starter cord again until the engine is running smoothly.
  • Once the saw is running, quickly 'blip' the throttle to bring it down to a safe idling speed.
  • You can then pick up the saw and disengage the chain brake, ready for your task.

How to Start a Battery-Powered Chainsaw

One of the big advantages of a battery chainsaw is how incredibly easy it is to start. They are perfect for home users who want to get straight to work.

  • Make sure the battery is fully charged and securely clicked into the saw.
  • Engage the chain brake prior to use.
  • Press the power button and then squeeze the trigger to start the motor. Please note, some battery saws will not start with the chain brake engage, so you can release this once the saw is safely in your hands.
